R. MILLER ADAMS

Managing Partner

Miller is a Co-founder and Managing Partner at Pier 70 and is responsible for investor development and relations for the fund. Additionally, he helps lead the design and execution of the Pier 70 strategic deal flow strategy. Miller brings 20+ years of experience in the technology sector. He served as VP Global R&D Strategy at The Boeing Company and President of Boeing Phantom Works Investments, Inc. His responsibilities at Boeing included a broad set of corporate technology venture initiatives.

He is a lawyer by training and started his professional career in private law practice where his work included advising early stage technology companies on financing and general business matters. He then joined The Boeing Company as a senior executive in the Information, Space and Defense Systems group responsible for the development of strategies designed to position the company as a global systems integrator in the wireless industry. Very quickly he was asked to transition to the Advanced Technology Division, Phantom Works, to lead a new team; Technology Planning and Acquisition (TP&A) as Vice President. The mission of TP&A was to consolidate, and coordinate communications related activities among the newly acquired assets of Hughes, Rockwell and McDonnell Douglas. TP&A evolved into a significant organization under his leadership including responsibilities for Enterprise Technology Planning, University Relations, Industrial Participation, Global R&D Strategy, Global Venture Capital Investments, and the Chairman’s Innovation Initiative (CII). He made the initial investments in the Global Venture Capital investment program and later hired Robert (Bob) Balk to lead this program which grew to a $250 million portfolio of 32 venture funds delivering $1.5 billion in value to the company. The CII was created at the direction of the CEO and Chairman of the Company, as an internal incubator designed to create business opportunities around Boeing technologies. CII successfully assisted and directed Boeing technology teams in developing commercialization strategies built around proprietary technologies leading to over 35 successful “Spin-Out” and “Spin-In” companies and commercial licensing transactions.

While at Boeing Miller opened the company’s first international R&D facility and created an internal incubator strategy designed to create business opportunities around Boeing technologies.

Following his successful career at Boeing, Miller joined Integral Systems, Inc. as Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs, General Counsel and Secretary. Integral Systems, (NASDAQ), is the world leader in satellite command and control technologies. Miller directed all legal work and was responsible for an array of corporate functions including Human Resources. Facilities, Contracts, Procurement, Government Compliance, Classified Facilities, Corporate Security, Quality and Export Compliance. Integral Systems was successfully sold to another public company.

Miller earned a BA from Seattle University and a JD at The University of Puget Sound School of law, (now Seattle University School of Law). He has a long history of corporate and non-profit board leadership experience including Accenture Federal Services [NYSE:ACN], Harvey Mudd College Board of Trustees (Claremont Consortium), The Rainier Club – Past President, Technology 4America.org – Convening Board Member, Seattle University – Board of Regents, Washington Opportunity Scholarship – Board Member (a Gubernatorial Appointment), and various private companies. Miller is admitted to practice before various state and federal courts and is a member of local and national bar associations.
